Summer Blog Post
This summer I focused on painting family snap shots. I created 3 main paintings, with my work culminating in the summer project for class. One of my main focuses with these paintings have been to hone in my craft, I did this by being more diligent with details than I am normally inclined to be. For instance in the painting of the boy (my cousin) playing guitar I spent a lot of time refining the highlights hitting his shoulder and the back of his head. Additionally the first two paintings taught me how and where I can make elements of the painting stylized and more expressive. In the painting of me and my cousin I experimented with a solid color background and even though I didn't end up liking it I still found the experience fruitful. I also spent time researching artists who are similar to me and worked to understand how they communicate their message through their work. The artists that I resonated most with were Clarie Tabouret, Mike Silva, and Gerhard Richter. When looking for the photo I was going to paint for the project I tried to keep the lessons I learned from each of them in mind. The choice to pick the photo with the light spill was influenced by Gerhard Richter and the location of the photo being in a dining rooms ties back to observations I made by looking at Mike Silva. The photo its self proved a challenge, the picture was almost completely out of focus and the colors where very hard to figure out. Even though it was very difficult I am happy with how the final product came out and I know that I learned alot of valuable lessons, especially if I continue to work with family snap shots.
